On January 19,2016 YC patrol lost Darren Johnson in an avalanche accident while conducting snow research while on duty. In the wake of this tragedy YC patrol set up an avalanche education fund in his memory to help send patrollers from the greater Yellowstone area to the National Avalanche School.
